A Message from Our Executive Director

Welcome back everyone,
I hope you all had a restful and rejuvenating winter break.

As we step into the new year and a new semester, I am thrilled to introduce the first issue of The Bluelight Bulletin!

This monthly newsletter is designed to keep you informed about important updates, safety initiatives, and resources available to you. At the CWRU Division of Public Safety, your safety and wellbeing are always our top priority, and we believe that staying connected and informed is a key part of creating a secure and supportive environment.

In each issue, you can expect to find safety tips, event announcements, highlights from our team, and opportunities to engage with our community efforts. We’re excited to use this platform to share valuable insights and hear from you as well.

Here’s to a safe and successful semester ahead!

Sincerely,

Behind the Badge
with Officer Rios

Meet David Rios, an officer on our first shift platoon! He takes great pride in his work at Case Western Reserve University and the impact he makes on the community. We did a quick Q&A with Rios and here's what he had to say:

Q: What is one of the things you enjoy most about working at Case Western Reserve University?
I like knowing that I am adding to the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff on-campus. Every day, I feel a sense of purpose in contributing to a community where people can learn, grow, and thrive without fear. Whether I’m responding to an emergency or simply offering a reassuring presence on campus, it’s rewarding to know that I’m making a difference in people's lives.

Q: If you could have dinner with one person in history who would it be?If given the chance, I would love to have dinner with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Q: What's your bucket list dream vacation?
When it comes to my bucket list, I dream of visiting Japan, it's a pretty cool place with a rich culture!

 ☁︎  Did You Know?  ☁︎

Snowflakes are actually clear, but they appear white because of the way light interacts with their complex structure! Each snowflake is made of ice, which is transparent. However, when snowflakes cluster together, the light bounces off the ice crystals in many different directions, scattering all colors of light and making snow look white to our eyes!

Stay Warm This Winter

As winter temperatures drop, it's important for students to stay warm while navigating campus. Here are a few tips to help you stay cozy:

Start by layering up! Rock three layers: a comfy inner layer, a snuggly insulating layer, and a wind- and water-resistant outer layer. When you’re inside, ditch the extra layers to avoid turning into a sweaty snowman, and go for waterproof gloves, boots, and gear.

Keep an eye out for frostbite—cold, pale skin with tingling or numbness, and if it gets worse, dark skin and no feeling. Hypothermia starts with shivers and confusion but can get serious fast, so stay alert and stay safe!

Locks Work!

Keep valuables and electronics secured and out of site, including in your vehicle. Get a bike lock and steering wheel lock free from the CWRU Police. If you notice something or see something missing, please report it by calling 216.368.3300.

Well-Lit Routes

As winter days get shorter, it’s important to prioritize safety when walking around campus. Always choose well-lit pathways and avoid isolated areas, especially at night. Staying in well-trafficked, well-lit routes ensures a safer journey and helps you feel more secure as you move around campus.
