Two dead, six injured in shooting at Florida State University
On April 17, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner opened fire near FSU’s student union building, murdering two people and wounding six others. The suspect, who used his mother’s handgun in the shooting and also brought a shotgun, was captured alive. AP interviewed one student, Stephanie Horowitz, who had also experienced the Parkland massacre seven years ago, which was the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. She said, “You never think it’s going to happen to you the first time, you certainly never think it’s going to happen to you twice. […] This is America.”
Ohio universities will risk losing state funding if they do not comply with SB1, after House adds clause to the FY 2026-2027 Budget
The Ohio House’s version of the FY 2026-2027 Budget includes a requirement that any nonreligious university comply with SB1 in order to receive funding for the Ohio Governor’s Merit Scholarship. Previously, only the state’s public universities were required to comply with the bill. State Sen. Jerry Cirino spoke at the City Club of Cleveland to clarify the expansion of jurisdiction of SB1. He said, “We are not kidding around. This law will not be ignored. It will be welcomed and it will be implemented at our universities and community colleges.” The budget has now moved to the Ohio Senate for consideration, where it’s expected that Cirino will introduce more appropriations tied to compliance with SB1.
Kaler announces 4 CWRU international students have had their visas revoked without notification.
Last week we reported that while many Ohio universities had announced that some of their international students had their visas revoked by the federal State Department, CWRU had not made a public statement on whether or not any CWRU students have had their visas revoked or been detained.
That changed when on April 14, President Kaler announced by email that four CWRU students’ visas had been terminated without notification. Cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer reports that the same has happened to at least 49 students across Ohio.
