How Women's History Month Got Started

Women’s History Month first began as a local, weeklong celebration in Santa Rosa, California, in 1978 when organizers picked the week to correspond with International Women's Day, on March 8.

After supporters began holding their own celebrations, in February 1980, President Carter asked Americans to recognize women's heritage in the U.S. for a National Women’s History Week from March 2 to 8.

It wasn't until 1987 that Congress passed a joint resolution and President Reagan designated the month of March as Women's History Month.

Then from 1988-94, Congress passed resolutions requesting for the President to proclaim March of each year as Women's History Month.

And finally starting in 1995, Presidents Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden, and even Trump again have issued proclamations designating each March as Women's History Month

The 2025 theme for Women's History Month is "Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations." From the National Women's History Alliance: "This theme celebrates the collective strength and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship, and leadership. Through their efforts, they have served as an inspiration for all generations — both past and present."

Only 1 Week Until the 35th Annual Unity Banquet & Scholarship Benefit!

We are so busy and yet so excited for the Unity Banquet coming up next weekend. The theme this year is “Gotta Laugh to Keep from Crying” Kindness as Resilience.

We'll have special basket auction for those in the Wine & Cheese Reception and then a basket raffle give-away for both Graduate/Professional and then one for Undergraduate Students as well!

We're also pretty excited about our speaker, Cleveland-native Ricky Smith!  He is a writer, philanthropist, and the founder of R.A.K.E. (Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere), a global movement dedicated to spreading kindness and inspiring others to pay it forward.

We will be sending out emails confirming student registration with information on transportation and attire. We actually filled all our undergraduate student seats over LAST weekend, and we're glad so many students are excited about this event as well.

Happy Independence Day to Bangladesh!
