Medical Education News - All Students

July 15, 2025

Dear Students:

It’s that time of year when a new academic year dawns. Every new year brings anticipated changes to the medical school and the medical school leadership team. Let me share some of these changes.

First, the Office of Student Engagement and Wellbeing has been officially launched as an important component of our Office of Student Affairs. The goal of this new office is to support every student in their professional and personal development and to foster an environment that is welcoming and safe, so that everyone can flourish. This office will support students and student groups by providing opportunities to build community and create respectful environments which will include leadership development, programs to enhance student engagement, and mentoring. The team includes two familiar faces, Monica Yepes-Rios, MD and Phillip Rowland-Seymour.

Secondly, we are pleased to announce the formation of a seventh academic society. Selected incoming first-year students will be assigned to this new society. Stacey Jolly, MD, will serve as the inaugural Society Dean. As you may know, Dr. Jolly is a general internist at the Cleveland Clinic and has been the Director of Career Advising for the Lerner College Program. She will continue to participate actively in the Career Planning programs across both the WR2 University Program and the Lerner College Program, while also joining the high energy team of society deans. Welcome, Dr. Jolly.

Finally, J. Harry Bud Isaacson, MD, has announced his intentions to step down as the Executive Dean of the Lerner College Program at the end of 2025. A full search will be initiated to identify his successor. In the meantime, we celebrate the tremendous partnership and collaboration that Dr. Isaacson has led. He has been a part of the Lerner College Program since its inception. We are grateful to him for his dedication and strong support for medical education these many years and wish him well in his next adventure.

I’ll also share that we have yet to hear from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) about our accreditation. It is our hope to hear in the coming weeks and will share the news when we get word.

Welcome to the new Case Med students! You've added lots of energy and fun to the HEC during orientation week. We're excited to see how you soar in your journey to become physicians. Special thanks to our incredible student leaders for orientation (peer handoff leaders), known as JAVE (Jack Loesch, Alyssa David, Victoria Grayson, and Elyssa Kim)! The theme of Commitment Beyond Self will serve you well. And don't forget, we're all in this together. You have a BIG team here to guide you! Remember, the bravest thing of all is to ask for help!

Publishing and promoting our Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Research

Case Western Reserve School of Medicine students are publishing and presenting great work. Please make sure to list your affiliation with CWRU SOM when publishing your work and to include the SOM logo on your publications and presentations.

Students should always list their SOM affiliation, regardless of where your mentor is affiliated. If your mentor requests you list their affiliation as your own, you may do so, but in addition, not as a substitution for CWRU SOM. Getting CWRU’s name out into the world helps us all. Download logo slides
