Does 'Hispanic Heritage month' include Latino's too?
This may sound like a silly question as many people may use these words interchangeably. But words matter. Not all Hispanics are Latino, so not all Latinos would necessarily be included in a strictly defined "Hispanic Heritage month." To start the month, let's start with the terms involved.
As a term, “Hispanic” was introduced in 1977, to refer to people who came from Spanish-speaking countries, and they share a deep history together. But “Latino,” first used in 1946, includes all people from Latin America, whether or not they speak Spanish – as those in Brazil speak Portuguese. While Brazilians may self-identify as Latino, they aren’t necessarily Hispanic. Here’s a helpful comic on this distinction.
Many people who say “Hispanic Heritage month” aren’t necessarily being exclusive to Hispanic people only. But we in OMA want this month’s celebration and attention to be intentionally inclusive of the larger Latino people and their heritage as well. As a final note, we also want to include that “the identity terminology that a certain group or individual chooses to adopt or self-identify with is highly personal and can be emotionally charged. For these reasons, there is no “right” or “best” term to use.” In fact, preferences can also be geographical as those from these groups in the Eastern U.S. tend to prefer the term Hispanic, while those in the Western U.S. prefer Latino.
We have compiled a schedule of exam dates for SI-supported courses for the current semester. We hope it will be helpful in scheduling student programs and activities. Although this isn't an exhaustive list of undergraduate exam dates, the dates provided apply to most of our first and second-year students. We will update this list as information becomes available.
The SI session schedule is available online and will be updated as sessions are added or modified, and our Peer Tutoring Team has begun creating tutoring availability. Students can view and schedule appointments via TutorTrac.
Finally, the Academic Support Resources staff can work with students one-on-one for academic coaching. Students can schedule appointments with us at journey.case.edu.
