Subject: Greek Life Newsletter

Hey Greek Life!

How did the barber win the race? He knew a shortcut. Hopefully you're super duper excited for this week's newsletter because it is EXTRA long. In fact, it is so long I'm not going to say anything else today so you can get to reading!

This week the CWRU community is participating in National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW), a nationwide initiative dedicated to raising awareness, starting conversations, and strengthening our commitment to a safe, inclusive community.

We encourage all members of the Greek community to engage with the events, reflect on how we can contribute to a safer culture, and help ensure that CWRU Greek Life continues to thrive as a space of integrity and belonging.

On Thursday, September 25th at 4:30 p.m. in Eldred Hall,Travis Apgar will deliver a powerful anti-hazing presentation that challenges audiences to rethink harmful traditions and embrace positive, inclusive alternatives. Drawing from his expertise in higher education leadership and years of work in hazing prevention, he shares compelling stories, research, and practical strategies to help students, staff, and community members recognize the risks of hazing—particularly the intersections of the mental and physical harms it causes. His message underscores the lasting impact hazing has on individual well-being and community trust, and inspires audience members to be the leader and commit to building safer, stronger organizations.

Tri Sigma Character Essay Contest

Each year, Tri Sigma hosts a character essay contest which challenges sorority women to consider how character relates to their daily life in 600 words or less. This year's topic asks members to share their vision for how living their values today can inspire lasting change for future generations.

The essay contest is open to all collegians affiliated with a national sorority (NPC, NPHC, NMGC, NAPA, etc.). Winning entries will be awarded $300 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd, and $100 for 3rd. The winners will also be announced on Tri Sigma's social media channels during CHARACTER COUNTS! Week in October.

Join the Greek Service Honor Society!

Lambda Eta Mu (LHM), the Greek Service Honor Society, was founded to enhance the quality of service and philanthropy. The Society exists to recognize those in our Greek community who give selflessly of their time and talents. LHM believes that through a giving spirit, Greeks continue their dedication to the greater community and a better world. With great humility of spirit, our members will make a difference to humanity by lending a hand to those in need and in doing so will better their campus, their Greek community, and most importantly themselves. The application will be released tonight and due Sunday 10/5, so make sure to ask your service/philanthropy chair about it!

Basis of membership:

  • A member of LHM should be regularly involved with a philanthropic/service organization. They should also be dedicated to service & philanthropy while inspiring others to do the same.

  • There is no cost to be in Lambda Eta Mu.

  • Applications will be reviewed and members will be selected by the VPC Service & Philanthropy, their GLO advisor, and other member(s) of the IFC/PHC executive board.

Time Commitment:

There is very little time commitment to be in LHM, it just serves as an honor society. There will be about one event per semester as a way to celebrate service accomplishments.

Benefits:

  • First access to service opportunities

  • Resume builder

  • Networking opportunities

  • Being recognized for your commitment to service & philanthropy
