First_Name,
What are YOU learning during Black History Month?
For 28 days each year, the nation puts special attention to Black History. The shortest month. And many of us don't even take advantage of this massive nudge. So much Black history has been whitewashed out of our history books, Heroes and Sheroes, inventors and firsts...
So take a moment, at the least, and google something. Then read it. Get out of your comfort zone and read something about a group of people who helped build this country but were actively deleted from its history. Black history IS American history.
And when you learn something, don't just move on, stop and reflect on why you weren't taught that earlier than now. Help all of us move forward.
* Check out the History of Civil Rights in Cleveland Webinar next Tuesday at noon. The speaker will cover will cover the long arch of political activism among Black Clevelanders from around the city’s founding to the modern civil rights era, and document how this rich history relates to the present day.

Portuguese has a word for bedside table that roughly translates to “mute servant” (criado-mudo). A few years ago I learned that the term came from the slavery period, to refer to the enslaved person who would stand next to the slaveowner’s bed and hold his belongings.
On the internet, there was a movement to change this vocabulary, to stop using a term that evokes violence and white supremacy. Since then, I would replace the word with a synonym and correct those around me to do the same.
