Finals Season On Its Way!
Good morning, Greek Life! With finals on the way, we in the Greek Life Office wanted to wish you well with your studies as well as the chilly weather we are experiencing (yet again). Please know that we are all here for you during this stressful time, and that we are all available for any questions or concerns you may have about your exams or your overall future. We have all been there, so please feel free to ask any and all questions! These are just a few exams - you are all headed for greatness!
How to Have Fun During Finals
This may sound like a joke, but I swear it's possible. Cleveland is always brimming with things to do, no matter what "only in Ohio" joke may be tossed around without care.
1. Study Session with Friends: this one may be obvious, but stay studying with your friends (or friends who can actually study and not talk for the whole period). Remember: study first, talking second. You can even schedule little breaks between your guys' study sessions in order to get some words out and destress for the moment.
2. Cleveland Events: this link has a lot of fun activities that are happening in and around Cleveland. Pick one from the link provided below with your friends from this catalogue and go wild (but not too wild).
1. Remember to Take Your Medication: one of the most crucial day-to-day routines end up being the ones we forget (or just push aside until we forget). I love medication reminder apps such as Medisafe, MyTherapy, or Pill Reminder to keep me accountable. A lot of the times, these medications are crucial to manage our day-to-day lives, and remebering to take your prescribed medication will only set you up for success for the remainder of the day.
2. Establish a Clear Bedtime Routine: while many of us are prescribed Adderall, Vyvanse, Ridalin, Concerta, etc., these medications can come with side effects. Notably, Vyvanse and Adderall are infamous for the "crash," by the end of the day, which makes one tired and sluggish. If this applies to you, my suggestion is to make sure you take your medication at a time at a time where you can predict when the crash will hit, and establish a bedtime routine around that crash period.
3. Create a Predictable Routine: by sucessfully implementing the two tips above, you are already on your way to create a predictable routine that you can rely on. Neurodivergent students do best with a predictable, structured, and clearly outlined routine. With your morning routine (taking your medication) and your bedtime routine (getting ready to sleep after feeling the "crash), all that is left is for you to build your study schedule, which looks different for every student. But remember to build a schedule that you know you can stick to. Never spread yourself too thin.
Finals Wellness Tips - Body Wellness
As you get older, trust me on this one, you start to understand (or more like, feel) the consequences of not looking after your physical body. Remember that the body is a functioning machine that is only as good as the sum of its parts. That being said, we all know that there is a positive correlation between mental and physical health, meaning that we need to capitalize on their synergy.
These may seem redundant, but I hope you take these recommendations to heart:
1. Engage in Physical Activity - regular exercise can not only improve your mood, but it can also release cortisol and reduce stress. I usually recommend some sort of physical activity after a long session of studying.
2. Prioritize Self-Care - as much as you think that there is limited time to take care of yourself during finals season, there may be a chance that foregoing self-care during this time may affect your full potential. Self-care is universal and has no set definition; set some time before, during, or after a long and productive study session by winding down (in a healthy manner) for at least 30 minutes to an hour to give your brain some well-needed rest.
3. Reduce Distractions - this one is my personal favorite, because wellness here can simply be achieved through limiting your screen time. This can be done through various apps that you may download from the App Store, such as Stay Focused, Lockd, Flipd, and Keepsafe App Lock, if you want to get fancy.
4. Keep Your Mind Set on the Goal - no matter where you are in your academic career, it is hard to stay cognizant of why you decided to come to CWRU and, more importantly, what you wish to achieve through CWRU's guidance. Always remember that one, two, three, four, or five exam(s) will never hurt your chances at success; come see Henry (me) at the GLO office for my TED talk and life experience about this.
