Hi First_Name,

CWRU Office of Multicultural Affairs

Rough %'s behind the Venn Diagram

  • 20% of all Muslims are Arabs
  • 97% of Arabs are Muslim
  • 60% of Middle Easterners are Arab
  • 85% of people in the Middle East are Muslim
  • 20% of the world's Muslims live in the Middle East
  • 50-80% of Middle Easterners are Arab, depending on the definition of Middle East

Other Key Facts

Key Fact: The majority of Muslims are not Arab.
While many of us may tend to think of Muslims as being in the Middle East, perhaps because that is where Islam began. Actually most Muslims don’t live there. Most Muslims (1 billion) live in Asia, predominately in south and southeast Asia. The country with the most Muslims is Indonesia.

Key Fact: Most Arabs (97%) are Muslim, but there are also millions of Arab Christians and others
There are significant populations of Arab Christians throughout the world, including in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Northern Africa and Palestine/Israel. Arabs are part of an ethnic group, not a religion. Arabs were around long before Islam.

Key Fact: Not all Middle Easterners are Arab or Muslim.
For example, Iranians (Persians) are Middle Eastern but not Arab, and many are Muslim. Israelis are Middle Eastern but mostly Jewish. Iranians are Middle Eastern but not Arab, the residents of Iran are Persian.
