Celebrating Native American Month with Canadian Artist Norval Morrisseau
Called the "Picasso of the North," Norval Morrisseau (1932-2007) is often considered the grandfather of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada. He is the first Eastern Woodlands artist to translate his culture — Anishnaabe and Ojibway — visually through different mediums like acrylic paintings, prints and drawing, making it accessible for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples.
Morrisseau created works depicting the legends of his people, the cultural and political tensions between native Canadian and European traditions, his existential struggles, and his deep spirituality and mysticism. His style is characterized by thick black outlines and bright colors.
Check out the headers below and his gallery for more of his artwork.
OMA’s Flavorite’s of the Week
by Steve Furlow
Jump into a friend’s car, let them know the grub is on you, and it’s not too far. Forget route 66 for getting kicks, for quality food at a great price, just head to BLACKBOX FIX. Located in the beautiful Legacy Village, a space that lights up during the holiday season, I promise this locally owned eclectic sandwich shop will have you all smiling, I mean flat-out cheesing! The secret deals and menu items on their Instagram, once tasted will make you want to shake the Chef’s hand. It truly is one of the best places to eat, The OMG Philly will make you jump out your seat, and tis the season where you can try it as you do some light shopping at Beachwood mall across the street. A supporter of the community and a restaurant where the eats are top notch, BLACKBOX FIX is always going to be one of my recommended spots!
That is this week’s Flavorite, so savor it, and be sure to DM OMA on IG if there is food nearby that I should try. I plan to chew and review it, because I cannot wait to share all the treats that I come across while eating my way through these one of kind Cleveland Streets!
Happy Sampling!
“The Personal Is Political”
Coming this Spring semester 2025, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the CWRU LGBT Center, and the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women have joined together to co-produce an ongoing series for the CWRU community.
Consisting of a series of interactive workshops, panel discussions, and keynote presentations led by scholars, practitioners, and community leaders, The Personal is Political aims to explore the interconnectedness between personal experiences and larger social, political, and cultural issues. By delving into the idea that the personal is indeed political, the program aims to create a platform for meaningful discussions, critical thinking, and personal growth.
