AdvantageCLE Tennis and Education is a non-profit organization that offers an afterschool program to Cleveland’s youth. Kids from grades 1-5 can participate in tutoring sessions in literacy intervention, wellness, homework help, and tennis instruction. Their goal is to empower students to reach their full potential on the court and in the classroom. Through CWRU SOM, we hope to form a connection between medical students and these kids to help foster their growth through various volunteering opportunities.

Case Western Reserve University’s Anatomy Camp is an immersive educational program run by medical student volunteers. Anatomy Camp was designed with the primary goal of igniting curiosity and passion for STEM, more specifically in the field of medicine, among students from underserved middle and high schools in Cleveland, Ohio. We aim to expose students to various aspects of medicine including physical diagnosis, simulated patient interviewing, and anatomy of the human body through a virtual reality technology called HoloLens. We also inspire and encourage students to pursue careers in healthcare, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, provide hands-on learning opportunities and access to educational resources that may be limited in their regular school settings, and foster mentorship relationships between the high school students and medical student volunteers.

Mentorship & Networking: CIG hosts several networking events designed to provide medical students interested in Cardiology with the opportunity to connect with mentors who may align with their interests within the field and can serve as longitudinal mentors for students. Faculty who attend these events are highly motivated to work with medical students and are usually open to allowing students to shadow and in many cases, become involved with their current research.
Research Guidance: CIG is currently working on a database of faculty members that have previously worked with medical students on various research topics relating to the field of Cardiology.
[Under Development–Cardiology Elective]: The Cardiology elective which will hopefully be launching in Fall 2024 aims to expose medical students to various subspecialties within the field of Cardiology. The format of the elective is expected to be a combination of a speaker series and journal club type elective that will span 8-10 weeks.

Cleveland Safety-Net Collective is a medical student-led organization focused on strengthening Cleveland’s safety-net healthcare system through a close partnership with the Salaam Clinic, a free clinic serving uninsured communities, predominantly refugees and immigrants. The clinic is excited to provide CWRU SOM medical students a unique opportunity to work directly with these underserved patient populations through patient interviewing, diagnostic procedures/exams, and contributing to treatment plans under the guidance of supervising physicians.

The Salaam Clinic, which is just a few blocks from the Health Education Campus, will offer students immersive, hands-on experiences through direct clinical encounters, virtual patient visits, pop-up clinics, homeless shelter volunteering, and a program focused on patient follow-up and retention after visits. Members can also support ongoing community service efforts such as meal distributions, blanket drives, and interfaith gatherings.

In addition to providing medical students with early, hands-on clinical experience, this organization is deeply committed to community outreach and expanding patient capacity to ensure that marginalized populations, particularly refugees and immigrant communities, have access to the care they need. The Health Advocacy Organization (HAO) aims to foster skills training and community engagement to develop the next generation of health advocates. We bring greater visibility to health disparities and drive health policy that promotes change through activities such as elective classes, voter registration, and advocating for health reform at various levels.

The organization meets its objective in part by leading the HAO electives at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. These electives were created by a group of student-advocates beginning in 2017. These courses will provide in-depth education and practical skills training for students who want to advocate for structural improvements to the health of our society. Outside of these electives, HAO provides unique outreach and advocacy opportunities like Day of Advocacy, mentorship, research, and service project opportunities.

Through this longitudinal curriculum, we hope to introduce students to how healthcare providers can advocate for patients and contribute to conversations about public health and broader policy. These electives will also help students expand their network of mentors and classmates who are interested in social justice advocacy so that they will be able to maintain and build upon the passion that led to their interest in medicine.​

Education: HEAL Palestine is developing programs and projects to address the immediate and long-term educational needs of children in Palestine, with the goal of rebuilding the education system for a brighter future.

Aid: HEAL Palestine provides urgent humanitarian aid to those who need it most, including feeding thousands of children a day, shelter, clothing, and other basic necessities to save the lives of innocent children.

The Human Rights Initiative's (HRI) primary goal is to oversee the Asylum Clinic, which provides forensic documentation of the physical and psychological sequelae of torture and abuse experienced by individuals applying for asylum in the United States. The organization is guided by research from Physicians for Human Rights, which shows that inclusion of a medical affidavit in an asylum application significantly increases the likelihood of approval. HRI is a unique opportunity for medical student volunteers to learn about the profound nature of the struggles of asylum seekers and work directly with providers in the forensic examinations and legal affidavit preparation.

To support pediatric patients at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's as they receive treatment for sickle cell disease.

Our purpose is to support pediatric patients with sickle cell disease at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s. Students in SCB are paired with these patients to provide companionship. Patients typically receive blood transfusions once a month, and during each transfusion, buddies are encouraged to visit and engage in various activities. During the stay, medical students join their patients in games, puzzles, and arts and crafts. Patients with sickle cell disease suffer from health complications and implicit biases in healthcare. Through this program, students not only have fun and improve their patient’s hospital experience but also develop a better understanding of the disease and those affected by it.
