To prepare for your session:

  • think of a time when you felt respected for who you are, and a time when you felt disrespected because of your identity;
  • think of times when you have and have not spoken up after seeing or experiencing negative treatment

Learn to:

  • Increase your capacity to recognize and engage in dialogue across the breadth of differences;
  • Deepen your understanding of how affiliations in privileged and marginalized groups impact treatment on campus, campus climate and productivity.
  • Deepen your awareness of types of micro-aggression and how they affect experiences on campus and in the local community.
  • Discover ways to become a change agent and diversity champion with new knowledge, ideas, and resources about university policies, programs, and best practices.

Diversity 360o includes post-assessment of diversity-related knowledge, as well as ongoing programming to assist members of the campus community, with the goal of creating a welcoming campus climate at CWRU.

Pre-Workshop Exercises

Diversity 360o is the new university-wide opportunity for our campus community to learn how we might make Case Western Reserve University a more welcoming environment for everyone, including those from underrepresented groups. The project has emerged from information from our campus climate surveys, from our desire to be responsive to the expressed needs and concerns of our students, faculty, and staff, and from our awareness of the local, national and higher education context in which we all do our work. Toward that end, in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs and the Office for Inclusion, Diversity and Equal Opportunity, we are launching a three-hour diversity education program for new faculty members. It will enhance our efforts to advance diversity through inclusive thinking, mindful learning and transformative dialogue.

1) A video on unconscious bias from Howard Ross, the diversity professional who provided the first diversity workshop for the executive leadership team in 2009. This video orients you to the ways in which an understanding of unconscious bias is critical to the Diversity 360 project.

2) The “ITooAmCWRU” video that was inspired by the “ITooAmHarvard” video. For those who are not aware of this already, we ask that you view the video and become familiar with our students’ experience of our campus.

3) The New York Times essay “The Paradox of Integration,” which suggests that campus climate matters in the United States are similar in some ways to campus climate matters in South Africa.

4) The Harvard Implicit Bias Test. Proceed as a guest by selecting from the available language/nation on the home page. There are 14 different categories to choose from. To align with the Diversity 360 Education Program, we recommend that you choose the tests related to race, gender, ethnicity and sexuality.
