The Basics of Mindfulness for Self-care and Stress Management with Marvin Belzer, PhD

Mindfulness is the art of openly and actively paying attention to experience in the present moment. This workshop will include (a) an overview of what mindfulness is and how we practice mindfulness in meditation, (b) a brief guided meditation, (c) discussion of how mindfulness can be used to deal with difficult physical and mental states, and (d) how I teach this material in an undergraduate course.

Meditation and the Brain with Sara Lazar, PhD

In this talk Dr. Lazar will present data about how the structure and function of the brain changes as the result of mindfulness meditation practice. These brain changes in turn lead to reduced stress and improved emotion regulation and cognition. In the first half of the talk she will discuss how mindfulness practice helps with stress, pain, and fear. In the second half she will present data on memory, attention, and executive functioning, including data from a 2-year follow-up study.

Sara W. Lazar, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Psychiatry Department at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The focus of her research is to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of yoga and meditation, both in clinical settings and in healthy individuals. She has been practicing yoga and mindfulness meditation since 1994. Her research has been covered by numerous news outlets including The New York Times, USA Today, CNN, and WebMD. Marvin G. Belzer, PhD, has taught mindfulness meditation for twenty-five years. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. For many years he taught a semester-long meditation course in the Department of Philosophy at Bowling Green St. University, where he was an Associate Professor of Philosophy. He teaches courses at UCLA including Psychiatry 175: Mindfulness Practice and Theory, and teaches mindfulness in many venues.

Suzanne Rusnak, MEd, MSSA, LSW

Independent Mindfulness Teacher and Coach

Suzanne Cushwa Rusnak MEd, MSSA, LSW, is an independent mindfulness teacher, speaker, and coach working in Cleveland, Ohio. She is a licensed social worker, and holds Master’s degrees in education, and in social work. She is trained in teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, as well as in teaching mindfulness to children K-12, and is a certified mindfulness teacher with the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. She has been teaching mindfulness since 2011. Suzanne has experience teaching classes for the public, organizations, universities, corporations and hospital employees. She gives wellness talks, creates mindfulness curricula, coaches individuals, and takes part in planning and implementing research studies in the field of mindfulness.
