Building Access Change - Effective August 26, 2019

After August 26, 2019, both Mandel School buildings will be locked during intensive weekend sessions.  This change applies to Saturday and Sunday; both buildings remain unlocked Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. following our standard building access policy.

In the past, our buildings were unlocked on weekends to accommodate intensive weekend students and adjunct faculty who may not have obtained University IDs.  The Mandel School Offices of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs will notify and work with all intensive weekend students and adjuncts in advance of this change to make sure they obtain University IDs so their access is maintained.

Students and adjunct faculty who have obtained a University ID and encounter access issues should be advised to contact Rick Jennings or Scott Wilkes, respectively, for assistance.

This change is being made to increase our safety during weekends when the main floors of each building are often empty while students and faculty are in other areas.  The Harris Library will continue to be open to the public on weekends.  Patrons will be able to call library staff to gain access.

Please reach Craig Zullig with any concerns about this change.

Vacation Donation Bank Open

Consider donating one day of vacation to the School's vacation donation bank.  Donations are accepted through August 15, 2019.  Every day donated can provide another day of paid leave to a Mandel School co-worker on a medical or family leave who doesn't have enough sick or vacation time.  Please be aware that while any employee can donate to the bank, only those employees funded by the School can accept donated days because of how time is charged.  Please consult with Melissa Van if you may need some donated time before accessing the University policy and donation form.

Workstation and Office Move Reminder

When contemplating any faculty or staff moves to/from a workstation or office, please work with James Strawser, in the Office of Finance and Administration.  James can provide boxes (if necessary), other assistance and coordinate with Mandel School [U]Tech to have any technology moved (computers and phones).  The Office of Finance and Administration needs to confirm the assignments are appropriate and only [U]Tech staff should move and reconnect technology to ensure all devices work properly.

Digital Accessibility Training Workshop

This new workshop series, "Designing and Developing Courses for Everybody," has been created for instructors to learn about developing inclusive and accessible courses, to increase our accessibility compliance, and learn together how to be positive, effective, and inclusive course developers.  This program focuses on practical, hands-on skills that will enhance the student's experience and success by using inclusive design to create a learning experience that is flexible enough to provide each student with the tools they need to succeed in the course!

This workshop will be especially useful for any instructors currently involved with the curriculum redesign.

All sessions are held in Mandel Building, Room 238 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Dates:

  • Friday, August 23, 2019
  • Friday, September 20, 2019

Francine Diaz, Digital Accessibility Coordinator and Instructional Designer, will be leading this workshop.  Please reach Francine if you have any questions.

All faculty and adjuncts should plan to attend.  Please click here to register.

Mac Users: Be Sure Zoom is Updated

A Zoom vulnerability had been discovered that affected any Mac with Zoom installed. This vulnerability was caused by a local web server that could allow access to a user’s webcam by a potential attacker.

In response, Apple pushed out a silent update to all MacOS versions that removed the suspicious local web server. This update did not require any user interaction.
Zoom followed with an update that removed any possible threat from this vulnerability, and CWRU Mac users should confirm they are running this latest version of Zoom (it should be version 4.4.55313.0714) to ensure they are not working with a vulnerable version. The version number will be displayed on the bottom of the Zoom log-in page or can be checked by clicking ‘About Zoom’ in the drop-down from the user’s profile picture/icon. Users should download the latest version for Mac if they are not running it.
If you have questions or needs assistance with Zoom, please contact the [U]Tech Service Desk at 216-368-HELP or help@case.edu.

Facilities Update - Getting Ready for Winter

Believe it or not, cold weather will return to Cleveland - but we're doing what we can to prevent it from coming into our buildings!
  • Mandel Building:  In preparation for the winter, the perimeter heating system in the Mandel Building will be drained and re-filled.  Facilities has identified one of the causes of “no heat” in certain areas last winter – the water and chemical balance was incorrect, causing “sludge” to build up and block the hot water from reaching certain areas.  This Wednesday, July 31, 2019, a contractor will be working in our garage to drain and refill the system.  They will also need access to the radiators, so please be aware they may need to enter your area.  It is anticipated this will be completed in one or two days.
  • Mandel Center:  Last winter, many spaces were too hot or too cold due to problems with the building’s single air handling unit and sensors that were telling it to shut down.  A technician has verified all sensors are working correctly at this time and will continue to monitor them.  As the weather turns cold, Mandel School staff will monitor the building each morning to immediately report any issues as early as possible each day.

Upcoming Events/Deadlines

August 13, 2019:  Let's Lunch!  Around 12 noon, Noble Commons and Courtyard.
August 26, 2019:  First day of Fall classes.
