3 things to do in Cleveland in May

CLE Skyline

May is one of the biggest months on Case Western Reserve University’s campus with commencement activities planned  May 13–17. As students become alumni and others turn their finals in for a much-deserved summer break, the energy on campus is palpable, especially when combined with glimpses of summer-like weather, longer days and the quads alive with color.

Whether you’re sticking around campus for an internship or job, or you’re a staff or faculty member looking to maximize the beauty of  CLE in May, there are endless possibilities to get out and explore the city.

We have a few suggestions to get you started. Want more ideas? Visit the Destination Cleveland website.

USS Cleveland Week

May 9–18

For the first time ever, Ohio will host a naval ship commissioning with the USS Cleveland being commissioned Saturday, May 16. Dubbed a “once-in-a-generation” moment, the celebration will begin May 9 when the ship arrives at port in its namesake city. Clevelanders and visitors alike are invited to gather on spots along the lakeshore to catch a glimpse of the arrival as it approaches from the west.

Opportunities to celebrate this milestone will continue with Community Day on Sunday, May 10, with public tours held each day through Wednesday, May 13. The official commissioning ceremony will be Saturday, May 16, at 10 a.m. at North Coast Yard.

This event is geared toward all, whether you’re a Navy buff, a historian at heart or a lover of all things Cleveland.

Check out the official schedule and learn more about the ship.

Cleveland Asian Festival

May 16–17

Gather in Cleveland’s MidTown neighborhood for the 17th annual Cleveland Asian Festival. Featuring cultural activities, cuisine and music, this event is an annualfavorite in the city. Held at the intersection of E. 27th Street and Payne Avenue in Asia Town, festivities will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

You can try out flavorful dishes and then vote for your favorites in the Best Food Competition, demonstrate your best moves in the Asian Pop Cover Dance Competition, and check out the goods for sale in the World Marketplace. Performances will be held throughout the festival, including the Kwan Family Lion Dance, martial arts and a Bollywood band.

While there, you also can get a free health screening inside the Asia Plaza.

This event is a true melting pot of Asian cultures, giving you the opportunity to experience many different traditions all in one place.

Tremont Greek Fest

May 22–25

Get out and explore the Tremont neighborhood over Memorial Day weekend with the annual Tremont Greek Fest. At the heart of this festival is food—authentic homemade Greek dishes and treats.

But even once your taste buds have been sated, you’ll have the opportunity to see Greek dance in action. You can also tour the ornate Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and peruse the flea market.
