From: Office of Multicultural Affairs Date: February 8, 2023 Subject: So many Events, Award nominations, & a Scholarship! [OMA Newsletter]
Dear First_Name,
Frederick Douglass was the Most Photographed American of the 19th century?
Douglass sat for more than 160 portraits and considered photography very important in ending slavery & racism. He believed that photographs were an excellent counter to the many racist caricatures.
He never smiled, specifically so as not to play into the racist caricature of a happy slave. He tended to look directly into the camera to confront the viewer, with a stern look.
"Winning the OMA scholarship was more than a pleasant surprise, it was a moment of pride. It meant that I was doing something right. Sometimes it’s easy to get lost in the struggle of working hard non-stop, where you don’t even realize any of your many accomplishments in school. This scholarship was a reminder to “keep on keeping on”. It meant that not only is someone recognizing my accomplishments, someone is watching after me, and has my back. That is how I always feel about OMA. Not only was the scholarship a moment of pride, but a sign of relief. The scholarship meant one less financial worry as I take on my academics. It makes doing well and being me that much easier."
Refugee Outreach Collective Releases Weekly Interviews with Refugees
What used to be called Students for Refugees, is now Refugee Outreach Collective ROC@CWRU. Their project, "Refugees on Record" is a project built in collaboration with ROC@CWRU School of Law, Refugee Outreach Collective, and refugees and asylum seekers in our home city of Cleveland and across the world. Check out the first interview from Friday, Feb 3 here. Additional interviews will be released every other week, and their next one will be Friday, Feb 17. See them listed on their CampusGroups events page.
This project was founded in January 2021 in response to the Afghan, Central American, various Sub-Saharan African, climate, and then-looming Ukrainian refugee crises. We hope that our interviewees’ stories inspire you to get involved with refugee and asylum-seeker support initiatives in your community and internationally.
If you are a student at CWRU and wish to get involved with refugee and asylum-seeker support initiatives, consider joining ROC@CWRU Undergrad or ROC@CWRU School of Law."
United World College @ CWRU's First GB!
One of the many changes in our student body is the increase in number of students who attended United World Colleges, an opportunity for students from many different countries to study with peers from other countries in order to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
Three are so many students at CWRU now that they've formed their own student organization, and just held their first GB meeting.
If you haven't met one of these students, we'd recommend it. They are incredible!
