Let the... zzz... Games Begin!
Did you know it’s really important to sleep well in college? And that you can do it without sacrificing grades or your social life?
College students may find a number of obstacles to getting good sleep, including noisy roommates, an overbooked schedule, or stress about schoolwork. But it’s essential to get enough sleep in college in order to maximize your academic potential, maintain your active schedule, and make and sustain new friendships — not to mention staying physically healthy.
Luckily, there are lots of things students can do to enjoy better sleep. These include committing to regular bedtimes and wake-up times, minimizing dorm room noise, prioritizing sleep hygiene, and getting your health checked out if all else fails.
This week, Greek Life is excited to begin March Napness: a weekly trivia game on sleep. Topics will include: sleep statistics, the benefits of good sleep hygiene, the consequences of sleep depravation, tips to improve sleep, how to take smart naps, the science behind sleep, sleep disorders, and MORE! Goodluck to everyone and may the best rested chapter win!!
Round One Now Open
Welcome to March Napness. Starting TODAY, answer the Round One trivia questions using the link below. Feel free to use any resources you like and tell your friends. Chapter's with the most engagement and correct answers advance to the next round. Do you have what it takes to sleep like a greek?
Round One Ends: Monday, March 18th at 11:55pm
Participation is 100% optional. This event is not a part of Greek Games. Check out this year's championship bracket below!
Powerful medicine: Understanding the importance of sleep for students
Heidi Moawad, MD | June, 2023 CWRU Think magazine
When Heidi Moawad, was a medical resident working 80- to 90-hour weeks, sleep deprivation was a constant. She learned to live with it, but she doesn’t think it’s ideal or healthy for students—or anyone else—to sacrifice sleep in pursuit of a goal.
“Unless there’s a serious underlying disease, a lot of treatment for sleep issues is around lifestyle,” Moawad said. “It’s something we’ve all suspected, but now science is really proving that getting enough rest is something you need to strive (for) rather than pushing through on not enough sleep.”
But she encourages anyone who tosses and turns for hours not to stress about it. “Just resting your body is beneficial,” Moawad said. “Let yourself chill in the dark; let your mind wander.”
--Spring Break Backpacking and Via Ferrata Trip with the Wilderness Society--
Anyone interested in attending, register here to enter a lottery for a spot on the trip. The lottery will remain open for entries from 7:00 pm 2/11 until 7:00 pm 2/16. Students will be selected to go on the trip shortly after, and those not selected will be added to a waitlist. The price of this trip is $70. Students who receive spots will have 36 hours to accept and pay here on CampusGroups before their spot will be offered to someone else from the waiting list.
We are aiming to bring 12-15 people on this trip (3-4 cars with about 4 people in each). Anyone who has a car and is willing to drive will have the $20 off the cost of the trip and be reimbursed for gas. If you are able to drive, please consider signing up as a driver (below)! In the past, we've had to limit the number of students we bring on trips based on drivers, and we are hoping to make this trip accessible to as many students as possible.
We will be leaving Saturday morning for the Red River Gorge and doing a via ferrata (kind of like a giant ropes course on the side of a mountain, no experience necessary) Saturday afternoon. We will camp Saturday night at an established campground with facilities and then be doing a 3 day, 18 mile backpacking trip around the gorge Sunday-Tuesday and coming back to campus Tuesday afternoon. Open to any skill/experience level and we will provide any gear you do not have.
This trip is only available to CWRU undergraduate students. Feel free to reach out to afs78@case.edu with any questions.
UH&CS and University Wellness Program are launching a Healthy Habits Challenge. Join us for week 2, where we will be focusing on nutrition.
Having a nutritious diet is important to your overall health
