Intro to Organizing

  • What is Organizing?

Organizing is a way of working with communities to create change from the ground up. It involves building relationships with people, mobilizing resources and taking collective action to address the issues that affect them. It is a way of empowering people to take action and create positive change in their own lives.

  • Organizing vs Advocacy

Advocacy involves lifting up the interests of a person, group or community in order to influence decision makers to act upon their demands or desires. Organizing can be defined as harnessing community power in ways that give impacted people the platform to push for changes themselves. A simple way to think of the difference is that advocacy involves working with people and getting their input in order to strategize FOR them, while organizing involves engaging people in ways that allow them to strategize and be leaders in the solutions themselves.

  • Organized People & Organized Money

The two driving forces behind any meaningful change are organized people and organized money. When people come together, they have just as much, if not more power, than those with money backing them do.
